Brit Awards 2022: Most female nominations in years

The Brits Awards 2022 nominations are in and it seems that the new gender-neutral nomination system has had a positive outcome in increasing inclusivity at the awards.

The Brits Awards saw a drastic change last month when it was decided to modify part of the early system used to assign nomination categories, due to criticism from several musical personalities, most notably Sam Smith.

The main changes were in two categories, best male and female artist and best international male and female solo artist. The first has been replaced by “Artist of the year” and the next by “International artist of the year”, opening the door to greater gender inclusivity.

Four new music categories have also been added, including “Dance act” and “Alternative/Rock act”, which will be voted on by the public.

There have been 18 female artists nominated for next year’s Brits, a figure that has not been registered at the British awards since 2010, when 22 women were nominated.

Still, according to the BBC, these 18 female nominated artists are up against 48 nominations for male artists, suggesting that there is still a long way to go in terms of equality in music awards.

And let’s not forget the nominations!

Among the top award nominees this year are Adele, Dave, Little Simz and Ed Sheeran, with four nominations each, closely followed by Sam Fender and Newcomer Central Cee with 3 nominations.

Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eillish and Doja Cat are among the nominees for Best International Artist, along with Abba’s surprise nomination for Best International Group.

The Artist of the Year award will go to Adele, Dave, Ed Sheeran, Little Simz or Sam Fender, who are also nominated for Album of the Year.

The Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year nominations will be announced in January 2022.

You can see the full list of nominations here.

The awards will take place on 8 February at the O2 Arena in London, and will be broadcast live on ITV and ITV Hub on the same day.
