A recent survey conducted by ‘VoucherCodes’ revealed that Cardiff is the junk food capital in Britain. In fact, this city spends more money on fast food and take aways than any other. In light of the article that came out on ‘The Independent’ on the 29th October, Milica Cosic wants to know if there is correlation between the student life in Cardiff and, the fact that residents spend so much money on eating junk food.
An infographic by CityBasedApartments, 2017, shows that Cardiff University is one of the top eight in Britain. In fact, amongst this, the university city lies in the top seven most affordable cities to live in, meaning rent prices are lower than in cities like London. Alongside this, it has been deemed the top eight to have a city with bustling nightlife.
Statistics provided by ‘Save The Student’, also showed that in 2016, one in four students had never budgeted. The survey run by ‘VoucherCodes’ showed that an astonishing 11% admitted to managing their finances properly. Moreover, of the 2,000 students questioned by STS, students spend the the second most of their money on food, with the most being rent. As a matter of fact, since 2015, students on average spent £14 more on food.
And, indeed there may be a correlation between the money and food. It seems that students are spending more money on food because of low rent prices which results to to them eating fast food. Too, during a night out and with students not budgeting well, money may be spent on more alcohol and fast food. It may be no wonder after all that Cardiff has been named junk food central.
