And the new Doctor Who companion is…

Millie Gibson, of Coronation Street fame, has been announced as the new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s incarnation of The Doctor.

Materialising on stage live at Children in Need, Millie Gibson, known for playing Kelly Neelan in long-running soap, Coronation Street, stepped from the TARDIS, to meet Mel Giedroyc and Jason Manford and announce to the world that she was taking on the role of the companion.

Gibson also revealed that her character’s name would be Ruby Sunday, or Ruby Sundae, after Mel quickly probed Gibson on the spelling.

Gibson was not among the top of the fan speculation as to who might be taking the role of the companion, as most Whovian speculators expected Strictly star Rose Ayling-Ellis to be securing the role.

Doctor Who is set to return with 60th anniversary specials in 2023 with David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Neil Patrick-Harris and Ncuti Gatwa. It’s unclear whether we could expect Gibson to appear in these specials, or make a full appearance when the full series returns.
