UK Hit By Storm Brian

Just as we thought the worst of Hurricane Ophelia was over, storm Brian is set to drop a ‘weather bomb’ over Ireland and other parts of Britain.

Forecasters warn for potential flooding, power cuts and transport disruption as storm Brian makes its way across the UK. Gusts of over 70 mph were recorded this morning in southern and western areas.

The UK Met office has issued seven flood warnings across England and Wales. A yellow  strong wind warning is in place for Wales, the south of England and the Midlands.

Coastal areas such as Porthleven in Cornwall were hit by aggressive waves this morning. Officials have warned people to “keep away” from seafronts and “be careful” on low-lying lands where coastal flooding is possible.

The Environment Agency, in addition to flood warnings, has issued more than 40 flood alerts across England – most of which are issued for west and south-west regions.

The Met office, told the Voice of London that “winds are expected to reach 60 mph across London later this afternoon.” They have also had reports of rail disruption across the UK due to falling trees.

The National rail {insert link:http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/174373.aspx} has warned that the weather could affect train services. Fallen trees and other debris may block railway lines temporarily and speed restrictions will be imposed in the worst affected areas for safety.Speed restrictions are currently operating on the Gatwick Express, Southern Rail and Thameslink.

In a statement to the Voice of London, a Met Official has said: “ it is going to continue that way throughout Saturday and still blustery through Sunday.”
