The power of women: Glamour’s Woman of the Year Awards 2017

The 27th edition of the Glamour Women of the Year ceremony took place last night at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York. Hosted by Billy Eichner, it was a celebration of strong and powerful women around the world.

As the world is gradually changing, it is very reassuring to see that there is an army of fearless women ready to fight for their rights. This award ceremony is the proof that a feminine revolution is on the way as women around the globe remain strong and united. From astronauts to refugees by way of activists, supermodels and Oscar winners, it gathered all the inspiring women of 2017.

There are many incredible women in the fashion and entertainment industry. Last night, some of them also had the honour to be celebrated as women of the year. Let’s see who they are.

Gigi Hadid
It is not a surprise that the supermodel, who also turned into a businesswoman, was named Supernova of the year. She is taking the fashion world by storm ever since her first steps on the runway in 2014. In addition to her many covers and runway shows, she is now a successful fashion designer. Her collections for Tommy Hilfiger and Stuart Weitzman are the must-haves of 2017. Gigi is handling her career with professionalism, humility, and kindness, thus making herself an inspiration for many young women.

Maria Grazia Chiuri
The woman who made history as the first female artistic director Dior ever since the brand was created, 70 years ago. As a rule breaker, she gave a modern and edgy touch to the brand’s classic style. She is also an active feminist and responsible for the famous “We Should All Be Feminists” T-Shirts on Dior’s runway last year.

Solange Knowles
The singer was called to the stage by award-winning author Claudia Rankine who rightfully pointed out that Knowles is a woman of many talents. “Singer, songwriter, performer, activist, visual artist, dancer, mother,” “She is an inspiration to all black girls and women, to all women, to everyone. Her wildly successful album, released in 2016, is called A Seat at The Table.”

Muzoon Almellehan
The 18-year-old Syrian refugee is the youngest ever Goodwill UNICEF ambassador. As she fled her home in Syria at 14, the only thing she took was her schoolbooks. Throughout her long, hard journey, she always kept in mind that it is crucial for young women to keep fighting for their education. She is now travelling the world with UNICEF to guarantee the refugees’ access to a proper education.

Maxine Water
The US Representative for California is indeed a woman to be honoured. Glamour celebrated her 37 years of public service as a congresswoman by giving her the lifetime achievement award. The fearless woman is not planning to retire anytime soon but will keep fighting for women’s rights in the political world for as long as sexism keeps rotting the administration.

Nicole Kidman
The award-winning iconic actress was celebrated for a long list of achievements in 2017. She won an Emmy for her incredible performance as a victim of domestic abuse in “Big Little Lies” raising awareness to the disastrous consequences of this social issue. Kidman is also an active UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Joining the list of incredible women honoured by Glamour magazine, the other winners at last night’s ceremony are:
Astronaut Peggy Whitson
‘Wonder Woman’ director Patty Jenkins
Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour
