If you’re wondering what to watch this winter or you are struggling for options, then look no further. This article will present you with the very best series Netflix has to offer at the moment, that you do not want to miss out on.
Heartbreak High: Netflix’s latest queer highschool drama showcases the best of the best. The Aussie series is a reboot of the 90’s hit show and has been adapted for the digital age. The original series’s phenomenal success welcomes us back to Hartley High, only this time it’s all that more scandalous.
The ten part series follows the lives of a group of teenagers figuring out their sexualities, friendships and personal identities. The once inseparable Amerie and Harper suddenly become adversaries, Amerie, as clueless as she is awkward, has no idea why. As the story unfolds we learn Harper’s reasonings but not before weeks of chaos for the teenagers. The supporting cast are just as fierce, most mentionably non-binary character Darren and their partner in crime Quinnie, two queer teenagers with their own battles to combat. The underlying humour throughout the series doesn’t go unnoticed either. As the story develops we discover each character is more messed up in their own way than the other, something our generation can all relate to.
The series has a flavour of both Heartstopper and Euphoria as the group deal with all things sex, drugs and everything in between.
Love Life: You may be thinking the last thing you need is another rom-com series, but this one is a must see. The ten part series follows Darby Carter, portrayed by Anna Kendrick and the relationships that shaped her life. With each episode embodying a certain romance she experienced, we soon discover the ins and outs of Darby’s existence, primarily the difficulties that come with dating in New York as a twenty something year old.
As the series develops, the museum tour guide strides through her twenties and enters her thirties after a number of failed relationships. The light hearted nature of the show provides an element of disposition. Darby’s friends and roommates, particularly Sara, played by Zoe Chao, give a comedic injection through genuinely witty banter amongst pals.
It’s not all laughs though, as Kendrick’s character struggles to comprehend why her relationships keep breaking down. Her relationship with her mother, or lack thereof becomes clear as well as past traumas she had obliterated from her mind.
While Darby doesn’t exactly end up with a fairytale ending, the character appears content with her love life and a warming scene with her mother makes up for that!
The Crown: With its newest season debuting only last week it’s understandable if you haven’t had a chance to dedicate the time to watch it yet, but you should. A whole new cast for a whole new story, Imelda Staunton takes the reins from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, while Elizabeth Debecki is the newest Diana.
Season 5’s storyline centres heavily on the continued breakdown and finalisation of Charles and Diana’s marriage, the Queen’s farewell to her beloved royal yacht Britannia as well as the backstory and introduction of Dodi al-Fayed. Debecki’s acting in particular is this season’s triumph, not only looking the part but her perfected mannerisms capture Diana to a tee. The entire Panorama drama, which spans two episodes, is as engrossing as anything in any of the series’s previous seasons, both for its insights into the inner workings and politics of the BBC and for its painstaking recreation of a classic television event.
Plots no doubt fictionalised throughout, there’s no denying this drama series is like no other.
