Students from the University of Westminster are celebrating winning the top prize at the Student Radio Awards 2019.
Smoke Radio won the Student Radio Station of the Year, meaning members of the team will get their own shows on BBC Radio 1 which carries almost 10.56 million listeners weekly, over Christmas.
The shows will include more than 20 students, who are selected from the winners, to bring more local presenters in the radio network.
“We’ve been getting Bronze or Silver over five years now. It’s been a long time coming. The energy was insane when we got gold for Best Student Radio Station,” said Niamh Hutchings, the head of digital content from the Smoke Radio.
“It’s a surreal situation. We couldn’t process any thoughts, to be honest,” Niamh added.
The station was awarded Silver for the Best Station in the previous year.
The Student Radio Awards 2019 took place at Indigo, O2, on Thursday night. The ceremony was supported by BBC Radio 1.
