Pick up your poppies this Sunday

Next weekend the nation will commemorate Armistice Day. This year’s celebration is bigger as it has been 100 years since we laid arms to rest to end the First World War.

This Sunday the public will see a circle of fire lit around the Tower of London, with the first flame being lit by Yeoman Warders in an act of remembrance for this year’s Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers.

Volunteers will light the rest of the flames, which will stay lit from 17:00 until 21:00. The flames will be lit each night this coming week for the lead up to Armistice Day.

Not only will there be thousands of poppies and a ring of fire, but a soundtrack will play on Sunday 11th, inspired by war poet Mary Borden’s Sonnets To A Soldier.

Each night the public are welcome to watch for free from Tower Hill. A limited amount of tickets are available for a small audience to view the show from the Tower of London.

Last year, artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper were in charge of putting the annual event together. A massive 888,246 ceramic poppies were put into the moat around the tower – one for each British soldier who lost their life during the war.

As the flames are lit and the day gets closer, we will remember the fallen soldiers and all they did for the country.

Remember your poppy this Remembrance Day.

Other Armistice Day events include:

  • The National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph, Whitehall
  • Visit the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey
  • The Royal British Legion’s silence at Trafalgar Square
