Nation unites in silence

United in standstill, the nation remembers those who risked their lives in conflict for the 100th commemoration of Armistice Day.

It is a time when The Royal British Legions asks everybody to put everything down for two minutes and remember those fallen and praise the brave servicemen and women for the sacrifices they have made.

“Lest we forget – this moment is ours.”

The annual occasion marks the armistice agreed by allies of WWI and Germany on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.” To honour the date, up and down the country people bow their heads in silence for two minutes to commend those in and affected by the services.

Tributes were held across the country: Prime minster Boris Johnson attended a service in Wolverhampton, while leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn attended a service in Islington – the constituency seat he hopes to hold onto when the country goes to the polls in December.

This is the first time Armistice Day has occurred during an election campaign.
