A Kashmir solidarity rally gathered at Parliament Street on the day of Diwali. The protesters marched towards Trafalgar Square under the supervision of the Metropolitan (Met) Police.
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, initially denounced the movement as it might cause further tensions and advised that an intensified security operation will be placed around London in the course of the protest.
The Met Police gave authorisation only if the protesters would gather at Parliament Street, proceed along Whitehall and finish their march in Trafalgar Square. The protest was set to start after 14:00.
The buses which were supposed to serve Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Street were diverted due to the march.
