Iain Duncan Smith holds Chingford

The one-time Conservative party leader has held onto his north London constituency

Mr Duncan Smith, 65, has been re-elected as the MP for the seat of Chingford & Woodford Green, seeing off the perceived threat from the Labour party.

The result was a tight one – the pro-Brexit backbencher having his majority reduced to only 1,262 – more than 48% of the vote share.

Labour candidate for the Outer London constituency Faiza Shaheen increased the party’s share of the vote by 1.9% – a positive swing.

Mr Duncan Smith was first elected as MP for the suburban London seat at the 1992 general election, replacing Norman Tebbit who now sits in the House of Lords – also an ardent Brexiter – who served in the Cabinet of Margaret Thatcher.

Former Scots Guard Duncan Smith was Tory leader from 2001 to 2003 and Secretary of State for Work and Pension in the Cabinet of David Cameron from 2010 to 2016.
