House of Gucci: the heirs have spoken – and they are not the only ones

Gucci family releases statement against House of Gucci’s ‘painful and insulting’ portrayal – the umpteenth biopic that skipped its celebrity’s seal of approval.

The recent release of the long-awaited biopic movie ‘House of Gucci’ sparks strong opinions, some more relevant than others. The heirs of the Italian fashion House have spoken and not in director Ridley Scott’s favour. While audiences seem to appreciate glimpses into celebrities’ misfortunes – scoring the movie an 83% audience rate on Rotten Tomatoes, this isn’t the first time directors have been criticised for their narratives.

The original Gucci family described the recently released film as ‘painful and insulting’. The movie stars Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, former wife of fashion heir Maurizio Gucci who was convicted of having him assassinated in 1995.

While Reggiani herself gave the thumbs up to what she called Gaga’s “genius” performance, the rest of the portrayed people weren’t as pleased. In a letter first published by Italy’s ANSA news agency, the family described the biopic as ‘extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today’.

The Gucci family was particularly surprised by the depiction of Reggiani as a victim in a ‘male chauvinist corporate culture’ composed by characters that are portrayed as ‘thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them’ and that according to them ‘couldn’t be further from the truth’ of what they recall as ‘an inclusive company’.

While no lawsuit has currently been filed, on Monday November 29th the heirs of former Gucci chairman Aldo Gucci threatened to take legal action against Ridley Scott’s new film.

Talking about lawsuits, a pretty successful one became everyone’s focus in 2021. While freeing Britney Spears from the conservatorship that was helmed by her father since 2008 might have felt like a collective mediatic effort, the documentary released in February didn’t sit right with the singer.

‘I was embarrassed by the light they put me in … I cried for two weeks and well …. I still cry sometimes” Spears shared in an emotional recently deleted Instagram post. Framing Britney Spears deals with the events that led up to Spears’s conservatorship.

The singer, now a free woman, gave a whole new meaning to her ‘Toxic’ association, when she took the stand to speak about her poisonous relationship with the media: ‘It takes a lot of strength to TRUST the universe with your real vulnerability because I’ve always been so judged… insulted… and embarrassed by the media… and I still am till this day.’

While the Hulu show about Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s highly covered romance is yet to be released, it has already raised eyebrows, especially some iconically overplucked ones.

The former model described the programme as ‘a joke and cheap knock-off’ claiming she has never even heard of the actors involved. The show starring Lily James, 32 and Sebastian Stan, 38 focuses on the three-year marriage between the model and the rock star along with their notorious sex tape scandal.

Even if the Hulu release might have skipped Anderson’s seal of approval, it is still set to hit the US screen in February 2022. However, a UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
