Mass sackings at Twitter will see the workforce of 8,000 nearly halved after Elon Musk bought the platform last week.
Staff were told on Thursday evening to expect an email on their personal accounts with the subject line ‘Your Role at Twitter’ by Friday at 16:00 GMT (09:00 Pacific Time). The email was only received by those within the group being let go.
Musk has said that he had “no choice” but to majorly reduce the number of staff, as the company is losing more than $4m every day.
A class action lawsuit from former employees has been filed in the US against the media company over the short amount of notice given. Federal law requires a 60-day notice before a mass lay off.
The Twitter redundancies seven weeks before Christmas will leave employees jobless in a time of economic turmoil.
Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and ex-CEO of Twitter, posted on the platform on 5 November, apologising for the impact the redundancies will have on staff.
Since Musk took over the company, brands such as Pfizer, Audi and General Mills (which owns brands like Cheerios and Lucky Charms) have paused their advertising on the site. Volkswagen have become the latest brand to do the same in the wake of the mass sackings.
