Finally, a record that has stood for 50 years has been beaten. The US chart record for the artist with the most top 10 hits in a year, that was previously carried by The Beatles setting it in 1964 with there 11 hits including all-time favourites Can’t Buy Me Love and A Hard Day’s Night. This is now history, as Drake has taken the top spot with 12 this year.
The 31 years old Canadian rapper, started his career as an actor in the teen soap Degrassi: The Next Generation in the role of Jimmy Brooks, a wheelchair-bound character he played for seven years. After leaving the show he became of the biggest rappers on the planet after he signed a deal with Lil Wayne ’s label Young Money Entertainment. Later on, he founded his own sound label OVO and became the NBA ’s Toronto Raptors global ambassador. It comes as no surprise that Jay Z labelled him as the Kobe Bryant of the hip-hop.
His latest song, MIA with the Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny, is currently at number five. The rappers three number one hits are God’s Plan, Nice for What and In My Feelings, which also topped UK charts.
This year has been recording breaking for Drake. At 29 weeks he also became the artist to spend the most time at number one in a single year, beating previous record-holder Usher. The song MIA is his 32nd Top ten hit, putting him behind only Madonna with 38 and the Beatles 34 in the all-time list. Drake is currently touring the US and soon will follow the release of his fifth studio album Scorpion.
