Could this TV series be the new Game of Thrones?

Words: Joanne Clark | Subbing: Bernadette Galbraith

As remakes seem to dominate the entertainment industry, Variety exclusively reports that Amazon Studios could be making a Lord of the Rings television series.

Remakes and adaptations of already existing films and television shows are becoming more and more common. Just this year, we’ve seen the release of a live action ‘Beauty and the Beast’; a remake of the Stephen King classic ‘IT’; a new version of ‘The Mummy’ featuring Tom Cruise as the main character; and this Christmas will see the release of a new Jumanji film.

Last night, however, there were reports that there could be a new version of a classic film trilogy. According to Variety, Amazon Studios are currently in talks with both Warner Bros. Television and the estate of the late author J.R.R Tolkien, to adapt a Lord of the Rings television series.

The potential television series has been likened to Game of Thrones in terms of adaptation and style, as well as the comparison that both Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones originated as books before being broadcast on the big and small screens.

Lord of the Rings follows a group of Hobbits, including main character Frodo Baggins, and several other characters, as they travel through Middle Earth to defeat the main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron.

The Lord of the Rings is comprised of three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The books have been popular worldwide and approximately 150 million copies have been sold.

There is no doubt that a TV adaptation of the Lord of the Rings series would draw attention, whether viewers think it will be good or not. People took to Twitter to express their opinions on the possible adaptation:

The film series came out between 2001 and 2003, and were directed by Peter Jackson. It is one of the highest grossing film series of all time.

The discussions between the three parties are still in the early stages, but if it were to happen, Amazon could be looking at millions of people tuning in all over the world to see if the TV series will live up to their expectations.
