Bid to get George Michael classic No.1 a year after he died

Words: Marija Tomsone | Subbing: Lavinia Petrucci

Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is now the favourite for this year’s festive No.1 with one bookie.

It comes with the campaign to mark exactly a year since George Michael’s death by getting the song to the top of the charts.

The odds on George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s song being Christmas No.1 has been slashed from 11/4 to 4/6.

It is now ahead of The X Factor winner (whoever that will be) in the betting. In the past, there have been several campaigns to stop the talent show winner grabbing the top spot. Despite that, The X Factor winner have topped the chart at Christmas seven times over the past 12 years.

George Michael passed away on Christmas Day last year at the age of 53.

Other contenders are David Bowie, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran.
