Black History Month: 5 people to make you proud

Words: Stephany Malcolm | Subbing: Kate Reichdart

It’s Black History Month. During the month of October we celebrate what it means to be black, and how black people have truly changed the world. We can all think of iconic black figures like Malcolm X… but don’t be fooled; black people in the UK are continuing to make history and break new records.

1. Stormzy

Arguably the biggest UK grime and hip hop artist around. Stormzy has won countless awards like the Best Grime Act and the MOBO awards.
Singles like “Shut Up” and “Big For Your boots” made it no surprise that his 2017 album “Gang Signs and Prayer” was the first grime album to reach number one on the UK album chart this year.

2. Edward Enninful

He is British Vogue’s first male and black editor-in-chief in its 101-year history. Enninful not only pipped Alexandra Shulman to the new post with grace. But has promised to diversify the magazine in his first issue next month. He has blown most of his December budget on the cover alone – we say barriers are there to be broken. Read the full story on Vogue.

3. Anthony Joshua

Returning to the gym just three days after breaking his nose…the
British professional boxer is currently the unified world heavyweight champion. He has held the IBF( international boxing federation) title since 2016, and the WBA (Super) titles since April 2017. Absolute knock-out.

4. Thandie Newton

Born in Westminster, miss Newton appeared in smash-hit movies like Mission: Impossible and Run Fatboy Run, winning BAFTA awards for her roles.
Rumoured to play an existing role in the latest Star Wars movie; she is  one of the many brave actor’s who shared their experiences in the light of Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment claims. She first spoke out  in 2013. Fearless.

5. Idris Elba

Idris Elba. Need we say more?

The date has been marked in the UK for more than 30 years, providing art exhibitions, music events and celebrations. Make this month count and find out how you can get involved.
