Playing one of the most famous Prime Ministers of all time was never going to be an easy task. Previous portrayals of Winston Churchill by the likes of Richard Burton and Bob Hoskins leave big shoes to fill, however British born actor Gary Oldman has risen to the challenge after being almost unrecognizably transformed for the role.

In a recently released still for the Churchill biopic Darkest Hour, the 58 year old actor is a convincing double for the war-time Prime Minister. The film will be released in 2017 and could see Oldman (finally) win his first academy award.

Here are four other actors who changed their appearance dramatically for an important role:

Charlize Theron in Monster

Playing the role of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, Theron had to wear prosthetic teeth, shave off her eyebrows and gain nearly two stone in weight.

Tom Hanks in Castaway

The Donnie Darko actor piled on the muscle to play boxing champion Billy Hope in this 2015 thriller. Gyllenhaal had to undergo intensive boxing training in order to bulk up and look the part

Jared Leto in Suicide Squad

Leto’s mesmerizing performance as the Joker in DC’s Suicide Squad was the highlight of the film for many. Although many of his scenes were cut from the final release ( only ended up with seven minutes of actual screen time) Leto’s transformation into the ultimate villain took an immense amount of commitment from the actor both physically and mentally.
