FINALLY Sainsbury’s has launched a record label

Just what we have all been dying for. But, they probably will not sign your mate’s band.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has announced the launch of their own record label in collaboration with Universal and Warner music, cleverly called Own Label. The name pays homage to their own-brand line in the 70s – and the vintage influence does not stop there. BBC reported that the artwork is going to be inspired by the “minimalist packaging designs” of the Sainsbury’s in-house studio of the 60s and 70s.

While they may not be signing an indie band anytime soon, but they may be introducing their younger client base to some classics. The first two albums have been announced as compilation albums curated by musician Bob Stanley. Said to be a combination of familiar songs, and some “deeper cuts.”

Stanley told the BBC: “Those kind of compilations – where some of the songs are familiar, and the rest of the album is a revelation which can shape your tastes – I think are just as important as classic standalone albums like Pet Sounds or Parallel Lines.”

The two albums are set to release this weekend in 168 stores, with more compilation albums to follow in the future.

NME has released the full tracklist for both albums:
