A New Breed Of Celeb

With more and more YouTubers gaining recognition all over the world, it’s time to get acquainted with the A-Listers of tomorrow.

How many hours do you reckon you spend on social media in a week? According to an article written by The Telegraph in May, studies have shown “that the average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day, accounting for 28% of the total time spent on the Internet.” Apparently Britons spend about 20 minutes less on social media per day, but basically we all have some kind of online presence, be it Facebook or Twitter, Youtube or Instagram. With Youtube maintaining its position of being the most visited social media network in the world, it makes sense that we would see the emergence of a new breed of celebrity altogether – the Social Media Celeb.

Think about it, the past year has seen the likes of Zoella and KSI take off online from the UK, publishing their own books and signing endorsement deals. The culture of Youtube is something that is being cultivated all over the world now, because it gives the every day person sat behind their computer screens the hope of making it as the next big thing on the Internet.

Here at VOL Celeb, we love a good Youtube sesh. So we decided to curate a list of videos to introduce you to the world of Youtubers (if you aren’t already acquainted).

  1. Lilly Singh aka Superwoman

Indian girl in Canada Lilly Singh started out making videos where she would dress up as her parents and demonstrate what life is like in an Indian household, gaining her a massive following and causing her to rake in $2.5 million dollars in 2015. She boasts over 7 MILLION subscribers, a world tour in 25 cities that sold out and an About Me section that states “Spent thousands of dollars on tuition, graduated and got a degree. I make YouTube videos now.”

2) Kingsley

Enter Kingsley – serving sass online like there’s no tomorrow. The ‘Overexposed’ videos (that tend to rip apart anything that he feels gets too much exposure for no reason) were what built up his fanbase, and three years later he has over 3 million subscribers. Look out for his ‘Talko Tuesday’ videos.

SUPERFRUIT is a Youtube duo made up of Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying of Pentatonix. Pentatonix are an acapella group who recently won a Grammy – but that’s another story. Mitch and Scott will provide you with equal amounts of quality entertainment and style envy, as well as the most kickass vocals around.

4) Ben Phillips

Watching UK funny man Ben prank his housemate over and over again just doesn’t get old. If you’re having a bad day, his channel is one that is guaranteed to make you laugh ’til your sides hurt.

5) The Try Guys (BuzzFeed)

The Try Guys post videos for BuzzFeed’s YouTube channel, and honestly you can never predict what’s coming next. From dressing up in Grag, to simulating labour pains, to getting themselves waxed, there isn’t much these guys wouldn’t try for a video. More comedy gold for us!

So there you have it, the YouTuber starter package: a list of people perfect to get you acquainted with this online community, and who are guaranteed to keep you coming back for more.
